How to cope with a gambling problem

Once you’re certain you have indeed developed a gambling addiction, your objective is simple: you need to beat it and get it out of your life. The sooner, the better.

While that sounds simple enough, actually accomplishing that objective is infinitely more complicated and difficult.

Here are a few strategies meant to ease your task.

Tell yourself that since gambling is a negative EV setup, it’s actually a sure way to lose money in the long-run (which it indeed is). The longer you chase your losses, the further away you drift from ever recovering any. Tell yourself that the first step of getting out of a hole you’ve dug yourself into is to actually stop digging.

Pursue healthy social activities. Keep yourself busy with something much more productive.

Admit that you have a problem and don’t be shy to ask for help.

Never ever make even one bet. As we know, one thing leads to another and soon you’ll find yourself back in the hole you just began to climb out of.

Make no compromises about gambling, never negotiate with the impulse to gamble.

If your recovery process fails, admit your failure to yourself and start over.

Never let gambling wedge a divide between you and your family members. Be frank to them about the problems you’re struggling with and take advantage of their support.

Seek professional treatment for your gambling problem.
